Passe-partout

New York, NY2025
Finished entry closet with accordion doors open, revealing full-height shelving and hanging

A cramped entry with a shallow existing closet on one side and dead wall on the other, asked to hold coats, boots, bags, kitchen overflow — and the litter box. We annexed the whole nook: floor-to-ceiling shelving with a double hanging rod, four-panel accordion doors that fold flush against the wall, and a 10" cat hole cut into the bottom right panel so the cat comes and goes without anyone tripping over a litter box in the hall.

Scope

  • Accordion hardware specification
  • Cat-hole detail + fabricator coordination
  • Build with Red Crown Construction
Floor plan — entry closet with double hanging rod, open shelving, and passage to existing closet
Floor plan — 8'-7" run split into three bays: double hanging rod, full-height shelving, and an open pass-through to the existing closet.
Shelving elevation — dimensioned shelves and hanging rods for entry closet
Shelving elevation — every shelf spaced for what actually lives there. Paint-grade wood, dividers, hanging rods dimensioned for the millworker.
Accordion door elevation with 10-inch cat hole detail in the bottom right panel
Accordion door elevation — four 2'-0" panels, 1.75" paint-grade, 10" cat hole cut into the bottom right so the litter box stays tidy behind closed doors.
Install day with Red Crown Construction — hanging the accordion panels on their pivot hardware. A design-and-build we coordinated end-to-end with our long-time contractor partner.
Installed built-in with accordion doors open, stocked with bags and gear
Move-in day — doors open, everything has a shelf. Doors closed, the cat still has a front door.

Designer's note

A tiny footprint doing a lot of jobs: coat closet, pantry overflow, gear drop, and a discreet cat entry. The accordion doors were the unlock — they fold almost flush and give access to the full run without a swing radius eating the hallway. Built with our long-standing partners at Red Crown Construction, who take our drawings and make them real.
